Preparation for the IRIS-Certification from the Perspective of RAMS and LCC
The certification according to the International Railway Industry Standard (IRIS) is becoming a strong necessity for the rail-technology companies and in particular for the suppliers and service-providers in that industry. It is critical for maintaining a long-term and sustainable business success. IRIS sets high but uniform standards in the field of quality management. It includes far-reaching requirements in regards of RAMS and LCC. The IRIS set of rules was drawn up by the UNIFE (Union Industries Ferroviaires Européennes) in close
co-operation with leading rail system manufacturers. The IRIS-Booklet – a special document defines internationally recognised and
applicable standards for the quality management systems of rail technology producers, particularly their suppliers for equipment
components and engineering contractors.
The IRIS documents contain multiple references to RAMS and LCC in accordance with the increasing relevance of these subjects.
There even have their own section (7.11). Several excerpts clearly demonstrate the significance of this topic:
- The company has to define a documented procedure, covering all aspects in regards of RAMS (e.g. calculation, documentation, gathering of data, improvement plans and measures etc).
- Resources must be available to establish the requirements for RAMS/LCC
- Analysis of existing strengths and weaknesses with a recommended course of action
- In-house-trainings and workshops for the qualification of staff and discussion of issues
- Working out of standard processes and master documents
- Selection and introduction of appropriate software-tools
